Using
a variety of innovative policies, the Cleveland suburb of Shaker
Heights has encouraged and maintained racial balance in its schools
and on its streets since the 1960's. Building Bridges is
a 20-minute educational video about Shaker's Student Group on
Race Relations or SGORR, a student-run program that works to
combat self-segregation among Shaker students. For the past 14
years SGORR has sent integrated teams of high school students
into the sixth grade classrooms to conduct a three-day program
that teaches the younger students how to combat stereotyping
and racial prejudice. The workshops encourage respect and dialogue
between blacks and whites in the public schools.
